Be Ovary Aware 5K celebrates survivorship and raises awareness for gynecologic cancers

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Hundreds of people attended the Be Ovary Aware Run and Walk on Sunday, Sept. 15, showing support for those with gynecologic cancer diagnoses and celebrating survivorship.

The 16th annual Be Aware 5K Run and 3K Walk took place Sunday morning at America the Beautiful Park. Attendees were able to participate in the run, walk, Team Fundraising celebrations, and Yoga.

The event raises awareness for Ovarian Cancer and raises money for Sue’s Gift, which supports Coloradans facing a gynecologic cancer diagnosis. Returning for another year, FOX21’s Abbie Burke emceed the event.

“So we are really like a community-led organization. We’ve got lots of cancer survivors on site here, they do a lot of fundraising for us too to support this event so we are really happy to have them out here and be able to spoil them for the day,” said Susan Dinapoli, Executive Director for Sue’s Gift.

At the event, Fallen Heroes Tattoo also presented a check from Tattoo-a-thon for $22,415. Since partnering with Sue’s Gift nine years ago, Fallen Heroes Tattoo has raised more than $130,000 for the cause.

Funds raised at the event will go to Coloradans with seven different types of gynecological cancers; Ovarian, fallopian tube, uterine/endometrial, cervical, vaginal, vulval, and peritoneal cancers.

Sue’s Gift previously said studies have shown that people diagnosed with cancer have better survival rates and lower rates of PTSD if they have emotional, social, and financial support during their cancer journey.
