LOOK: EFF visits Babel restaurant in Pretoria following department of labour raid

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) visited Babel restaurant in Menlyn, Pretoria following allegations of exploitation and unfair labour practices.

A former employee took to social media to share the horrible working conditions at the establishment which include buying own uniform and equipment.

In the video that has been widely circulated on social media, a former female employee said they do not have work schedules and don’t have a basic salary and rely on tips which the employer allegedly deducts.

At the weekend, three people were arrested during a raid by the Department of Home Affairs, the Department of Labour and Employment and the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Two employees were charged for working without the necessary documentation to work within the establishment while an employer was charged for employing immigrants who do not have the necessary documentation to work.

This is not the first time the EFF has visited a restaurant to check if operations are inline with South African labour laws.

In January 2022, EFF leader Julius Malema visited restaurants to assess the employment ratio of locals and foreign nationals.

Malema said this was not a fight against foreign nationals, but to challenge business owners who refuse to hire locals so they can exploit foreigners.
