60.55% candidates score 5 credits in NECO SSCE

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the results of the 2024 internal Senior Schools Certificate Examination (SSCE).

The registrar and CEO of the council, Professor Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, who announced the release at the council’s headquarters in Minna, Niger State, said 828, 284, representing 60.55 per cent scored five credits, including English Language and mathematics.

Wushishi said 1, 376, 423 representing 709, 950 males and 669, 473 females registered for this year’s internal examination while 1, 367, 736 representing 702, 112 males and 665, 624 sat for the examination.

The registrar said the number of candidates with five credits and above irrespective of English Language and mathematics was 1, 147, 597 accounting for 83.90 per cent while those with special needs were 2, 267.

He said the council recorded a 30.1 per cent decline in the number of candidates involved in various forms of examination malpractice this year with 8, 437 as against 12, 030 in 2023.

The registrar revealed that Abia, Imo and Ebonyi states topped the performance while the lowest performing states were Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Borno and Zamfara.

Professor Wushishi said 40 schools were found to have been involved in mass cheating in 17 states, adding that the affected schools would be invited for discussions before sanctions would be applied.

He said one school in Ekiti State had been recommended for de-recognition for mass cheating in two core subjects and one science subject.

The registrar also said 21 supervisors in 12 states had been recommended for blacklisting for poor supervision, aiding and abetting, extortion, drunkenness abscondment and negligence.
